Ever had Leprosy?

The next few blog entries will be courtesy of my recent trip to Los Angeles, CA. This billboard made me laugh for quite awhile. I mean, leprosy? People still get that? In this day and age, and in L.A.? Obviously, they are lobbying for the importance of animal research here. Either that or L.A. has a huge epidemic with Leprosy! As usual I haven't done any research about this sign, but if their only goal was to catch attention, they definitely hit their mark with me! That should be the goal of most signage. Engage the target by capturing their attention and to make them think about your message more than the split second they see it, while passing by. I just wonder what the slogans were that got shot down? Here is a list of a few that possibly didn't make the cut.
  • Ever had Scurvy?
  • got polio?
  • Bubonic Plague got you down?
  • Not Typhus again!
For ways we've tried to catch public attention, check out our work on our website!

  2. I believe that the point of the campaign is to highlight a disease that most everyone has heard about, but which no one has to fear anymore...thanks to animal research.

  3. Animal research is a necessary evil. Until we can get better disease models (and we, as scientists, are trying all the time with measured success) then let's learn to accept it if we really want to find cures for everything from nasty viruses to heart disease to cancer etc.. etc.. 25 years ago one monkey was used to produce 100,000 doses of polio vaccines. Today a single monkey is needed to produce over 10,000,000 doses. Now isn't that some improvement I ask ? And as for the leprosy billboard, did you know that the armadillo is the animal model for that disease ? Think about it, there is no more leprosy today but still plenty of armadillos, yes ?

  4. I saw a billboard for an Autism Walk and the headline was "GOT AUTISM?" The whole Got Milk thing DOES NOT WORK in every situation. It's supposed to be GOT (SOMETHING YOU SHOULD HAVE)! People think they are being clever when it makes no sense at all.
